Gordon Michie appointed as treasurer of Veterans Housing Scotland
Gordon Michie has been appointed Treasurer of Veterans Housing Scotland.
Mr Michie succeeds Robert Dunne, who stepped back after six years in the role.
Established in 1915, formerly Scottish Veterans Garden City Association, Edinburgh-based Veterans Housing Scotland aims to provide affordable rented housing for military veterans in Scotland who are disabled.
To recognise the sacrifices made and to honour the concept of those disabled in service of their nation coming back to a country fit for heroes, it was agreed that a scheme based on the Garden City concept be created. This would give those who had been injured hope of a secure home in a safe community.
Gordon Michie served in the RAF until 1995. He is experienced in fundraising for forces charities and is currently the Head of Fundraising and Learning at Poppyscotland. He oversaw Poppyscotland’s contribution to the significant commemorations surrounding the 100th anniversary of the Armistice’s signing, D-Day 75 and VE Day 75. Gordon led a multi-million-pound HLF and Libor funded project and has considerable experience in developing UK and overseas charities’ individual giving programmes.
He joined the board of Veterans Housing Scotland in 2019 and is looking forward to helping the charity continue working with and supporting disabled veterans.
Mr Michie said: “Veterans Housing Scotland is the largest military charity in Scotland, providing homes for veterans who are disabled. As a veteran myself working in a civilian environment on a day-to-day basis, I am proud of our commitment to end homelessness for these veterans and our ethos of building lives building communities.
“COVID-19 has presented a new challenge for everyone, particularly charities like our own. As we look ahead to life post-restrictions, the needs of our veteran community will always be at the forefront of our work.”
Today, Veterans Housing Scotland owns and manages more than 650 properties around Scotland, housing over 1000 veterans and their families and is proud to have HM The Queen as Patron.
