The team faced tough competition from other secondary schools in the North East to secure its place in the Scottish final in May.

The Go4SET Challenge aims to enthuse 12-14 year olds about studying science, technology, engineering and maths. During the 10 week project the pupils developed their project management, communication and team working skills.

Guided by their teacher Gillian Mathewson and mentored by Grampian Housing Association, the pupils researched technology used in spending and tracking money in the past and present to identify new technologies that could change the way we spend, save and track money in the future.

Craig Stirrat, director of business development, Grampian Housing Association, said: “We were delighted to work with such an excellent team of young people and were very impressed with the way they used their creativity and organisational skills to plan and tackle the task. They used their natural curiosity to explore a variety of approaches to design innovative solutions to managing money in this technological age. I am sure they will use the expertise gained working on the project to go on to achieve great things in their future careers.

“As an innovative housing association we are committed to assisting people realise their full potential and take advantage of the opportunities to improve their lives. We have a particular interest in Fraserburgh through our provision of housing and involvement in regeneration of the area and it is a pleasure to be able to support the school in this way.”

Gillian Mathewson, teacher at Fraserburgh Academy, said: “Our pupils showed a great deal of interest in the challenge. They worked extremely hard, were very well organised in their planning and approach, showing self-motivation and dedication throughout the project.

“I am delighted they have done so well and that their hard work and commitment has been recognised.”

Charles Buchan, Fraserburgh and District Councillor, added: “I was absolutely delighted with the event. Schools must continue to support this Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) initiative as the pupils get so much out of it. Thanks for all the work put in by the organisers and the mentors from sponsoring companies. Congratulations to the Fraserburgh Academy team who won the Aberdeen Hub best overall prize trophy.”
