Great Grandmother and Bield resident celebrates milestone birthday
A home-owner at Bield’s Weavers Court development in Hamilton has celebrated her milestone 100th birthday with 50 of her closest friends and family – including her five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
To kick off Muriel Revell’s birthday celebrations, staff planned a celebratory coffee morning with some birthday cake and bubbly, allowing those at Weavers Court to mark the special occasion.
Celebrations didn’t stop there though as Muriel’s family planned a birthday meal at a favourite local Hamilton restaurant, Carrigans, which saw 30 friends from Weavers Court join 20 of Muriel’s closest friends and family for lunch.
Muriel’s daughter, Jan Baillie, said of her mum’s celebrations: “We are all delighted to have celebrated such a special occasion.
“It was wonderful to see everyone from Weavers Court all join in on mum’s birthday celebrations. She was incredibly grateful for all the effort that went into celebrating her birthday, both at the development and at the restaurant.”
Originating from the Isle of Arran on Scotland’s West Coast, Muriel started work from as young as 12, working on the local dairy farm. When she grew up, Muriel’s way with numbers saw her become a book keeper for a local bus company in Lamlash on Arran.
With Arran being a key point for naval ships to dock safely during the World War Two, Muriel met her husband, Charles, a naval officer who arrived on the island in 1942. The couple married on the island in 1944.
During the war years, Muriel worked for the British Red Cross. When the war was over, Muriel and Charles found themselves in Dover where they lived for more than 30 years and their two daughters, Hazel and Janet, were born.
It was in 1980 that Muriel and Charles decided to return to their family home on Arran, which has been in their family for over 150 years.
Muriel owes her longevity to living a great life which has seen her treat people as she would want to be treated.
Muriel moved to Bield’s private retirement housing development, Weavers Court, in Hamilton when it opened 12 years ago, which allowed her to be closer to her daughter, Jan. She enjoys reading and crosswords as hobbies but often takes part in the various activities taking place at the development between staff and residents.
Alex Miller, development manager at Weavers Court, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be celebrating Muriel’s birthday with her.
“It’s such a privilege to be surrounded by people such as Muriel and we are delighted that she stays with us at Weavers Court.
“It has been great fun planning her birthday celebrations. All the staff were very keen to do something to mark the occasion and so we thought some birthday cake and a glass of fizz was a perfect way to celebrate.
“There is nothing better than seeing those who live at our development live long and happy lives and to share experiences like these with them makes our job so worthwhile.”
