HHP will use the funding to carry out room-in-roof insulation to 68 homes before April 2017.

The bid was put together in partnership with the Comhairle, who will administrate the project.

Cllr. Norman M Macleod, chair of environment & protective services, said: “The Comhairle is delighted that this bid for funding with HHP has been successful. The funding was over subscribed but to receive £340k, which is one of the highest amounts awarded, is a testament to the quality of the bid and will make a huge difference to those homes being insulated. It also recognises that the islands have the highest levels of fuel poverty in the UK.”

HHP chairman Iain Macmillan was also delighted with the news of the award: “HHP has a significant number of homes that need this insulation and to receive this amount of funding is great news for tenants. I am particularly pleased that the Scottish Government has recognised the need for this type of insulation in the Outer Hebrides. I would also like to thank the Comhairle for their assistance in putting the bid together.”

Housing minister Kevin Stewart added: “The Scottish Government will continue to prioritise tackling fuel poverty and remains committed to helping those most in need.

“I’m delighted to see the good progress being made by HHP and the Comhairle and that they are moving quickly to use this additional funding. The council and their partners have an excellent track record in this area and I look forward to continuing to work with them.”
