Homeless actors revive Cathy Come Home
A theatre group that works with homeless and disadvantage people are to stage a one-off production of Cathy Come Home in London next month.
Cathy Come Home was released in 1966 by director Ken Loach and tells the story of a young families slide into homelessness.
It caused huge controversy and led to public outcry at the state of British housing.
Cardboard Citizens’ Community Ensemble will revive the story 50 years after its first release with a cast and crew made up on 20 people who have experienced homelessness and rough sleeping.
“Sometimes life can be overwhelming and scary, but we are safe within the confines of theatre,” said Oscar-winning actress and Cardboard Citizens ambassador Kate Winslet.
She added: “We hope this production will challenge public perceptions of what homeless people can do, given the chance.”
The performance will be followed by a panel discussion on ‘Homelessness 50 years on – what’s changed?, featuring key figures in housing, the arts and the social sector.
