Homelessness protesters in Glasgow threatened with eviction from George Square

Protesters who set up tents in George Square to protest the treatment of homeless people in Glasgow have been threatened with eviction by Glasgow City Council.

Up to a dozen people are currently camping out in protest of the council “leaving people to die in shop doorways”, protest organiser Jason Miller told Glasgow Live.

Mr Miller, who has a home but was homeless once before, said many of the protesters are homeless and would not leave until “everyone here at the camp gets a house and a Scottish Housing Tenancy agreement”.

Glasgow City Council said the protesters had rejected offers of help to find accommodation and free hot food.

A spokesperson for the council said: “Continual offers of help to find accommodation and access free, hot food and other support have been repeatedly rejected by the protesters and, despite our best efforts, constructive dialogue with our homelessness teams has broken down.

“Several of the protesters are not homeless, but our offers of help to anyone who is, remain.

“Unfortunately, if the individuals involved do not need, or want our help, we have no option but to formally ask those occupying George Square to leave.

“We fully respect their right to protest, but must also seek to ensure George Square is available for use by everyone.

“If the protesters refuse to leave of their own volition, we’ll have no choice but to begin legal proceedings to evict them. But we hope anyone who needs help accepts the genuine offers made. Help is available - no one need camp out.”
