Inverclyde's council leader steps down

Councillor Stephen McCabe has stepped down from the role of leader of Inverclyde Council, the local authority has confirmed.

Councillor Natasha McGuire will continue to deputise until a new leader is appointed.

The announcement comes after Mr McCabe appeared at Greenock Sheriff Court at a hearing on Friday morning.

The councillor was charged with aggressive behaviour towards a woman and assaulting her during an incident in Kilmacolm last month.

Mr McCabe pled not guilty.

A council spokesman said: “We can confirm that Councillor McCabe has indicated that he has decided to step back from his role as Leader of Inverclyde Council.

“Deputy leader Councillor McGuire will continue to deputise, following existing governance arrangements until a new leader is appointed.”

The next meeting of Inverclyde Council will take place on Thursday 5 December 2024.
