A partnership between Glasgow Kelvin College and Wheatley Group which brings digital access and learning to some of Scotland’s most digitally excluded communities has been recognised with a prestigious award.

The John Wheatley Learning Network, which is also supported by Glasgow City Council Community Planning Partnership, won the Education Award at the Inspiring City – People Make Glasgow Awards 2016.

From a field of five candidates, the Learning Network’s win was announced at the Herald Inspiring City Awards ceremony in Glasgow’s Radisson Blu Hotel. The Education Award, sponsored by Glasgow Taxis, recognises a pioneering achievement that has made an impact on the learning and development of Glasgow citizens at all levels.

With state-of-the-art digital centres in 35 host locations in and around Glasgow, the John Wheatley Learning Network is open to local residents, and provides access to Click & Connect computing technology to help with staying in touch, job searching, employability, shopping, paying bills – many of the things others take for granted.

Network users also have the opportunity to learn new skills and gain qualifications with college tutor and volunteer support.

Principal of Glasgow Kelvin College, Alan Sherry, said: “Here at Glasgow Kelvin College we are absolutely delighted that the John Wheatley Learning Network has won the prestigious Education Award. This is a recognition of the importance of community-based delivery which encourages people to take that first step into learning.

“Key to the network’s success has been the strong partnership support we’ve achieved working with Wheatley Group and through Glasgow City Council’s Thriving Places initiative - and, obviously, through the host centres themselves.

“However, the real accolade must go to the learning centres’ hard working staff and excellent volunteers, as well as the talented tutors and youth workers who make the network what it is. Our thanks go to them and to the Award sponsors, Glasgow Taxis. Congratulations.”

Evelyn McDowall, digital lead at Wheatley Group, said: “Being online is an essential part of modern life, and no one should be left behind because they lack the resources or confidence to use the internet.

“Our Click & Connect centres mean that people are able to get online to look for jobs, access further education and qualifications, and get the best deals on their shopping and bills.

“We are delighted that the difference that Click & Connect and the John Wheatley Learning Network has made in our communities has been recognised with this award.”

Chair of Glasgow City Council North East Community Planning Partnership, Bailie Marie Garrity, added: “It’s fantastic to see the John Wheatley Learning Network recognised for the tremendous work they do in communities throughout Glasgow.

“We all know how important a figure John Wheatley was during his time representing the East End of Glasgow, so it’s fitting that his legacy lives on and continues to support people to transform their lives to this day.

“Glasgow City Council is proud to be able to support such an organisation – and I look forward to their continuing success in the years ahead.”
