Lara Turner: The opportunity to expand your knowledge and continue your studies is fantastic
C~urb PSL graduate trainee Lara Turner shares some insights into her role and how it has helped her begin her housing career.
Management facilitates you to work on different teams that align with your interests and the business needs.
During the first year of my traineeship, I was based in the Open Market Shared Equity (OMSE) team, the administrative agents for the Scottish Government’s First-Time Buyers Initiative Scheme, who help first-time buyers get on the property ladder.
I gained experience of social media planning, putting advertisements on the website, and helping different teams within the business with their marketing strategy.
After completing an undergraduate in History and Politics degree and then a masters in Museum Studies, I had no idea what I was going to do when I left university.
When I came across this job, I knew it was the right one for me. I really related C~urb’s values. Also, I really like that you could continue your learning on the job.” She said an example of this is how Link has encouraged her to continue her studies through a postgraduate degree in housing at Stirling University. “I can learn the knowledge at university but also come into the workplace and build on that knowledge but also learn from different colleagues as well. It really helps connect what I am learning in the classroom with my job.
I enjoy the variety of roles and interaction with colleagues across the business, as well as working with other graduates and projects. I also like the creativity and the chance to be an innovative thinker. When I come across new procedures, I look at how I can update them or make them better.
The emphasis on empathy in the job description resonated with me. When working with customers I ensured I was empathetic at all times. It is really nice to know you are doing a job that is helping Curb’s tenants.
I enjoy working with the other graduates and this has made me more collaborative and has built a nice community within the workplace. At Link there are opportunities for graduates to put their ideas forward and that they feel listened to by senior managers and colleagues. It’s a really good place to work. I feel like everyone works together, and by doing your graduate traineeship, you get a great opportunity to work with other departments. The opportunity to expand your knowledge and continue your studies is fantastic.
