Laura Sneddon, who works for the Garrion Peoples Housing Co-operative, has won the Tell Organisation’s Modern Apprenticeship Rising Star of the Year Award 2023.

She achieved her modern apprenticeship in Business & Administration SCQF Level 3 with the Tell Organisation.

As an employer, Garrion Peoples Housing Co-operative nominated Laura and said it is proud of her for winning this prestigious award. Ms Sneddon was selected as an outright winner by Tell, whose panel judged over 300 modern apprentices from various sectors.

Ms Sneddon left school and started as a Modern Apprentice in Housing with the Co-operative during the pandemic. She met her colleagues over Zoom and during this difficult time she completed her Social Housing SCQF Level 6. This was not an easy task being new to the sector having completed most of her assignments by Zoom and without the direct office base interaction. In addition to this, she supported tenants through a very difficult time.

Her achievements have been remarkable over the short time in the sector as Laura was also shortlisted for “Apprentice of the Year” in 2022 along with two other modern apprentices as one of the finalists in the CIH Apprenticeship of the Year Award.

Ms Sneddon is making a valuable contribution to the work of Garrion Peoples Housing and due to Laura’s determination and drive to keep going she is currently undertaking her CIH Level 3 in Housing Practice.

Laura Sneddon said: “As we are a small community-based housing co-operative with a community centre this has allowed me to gain vast knowledge in a variety of areas. Everyone has been very supportive to me and helped me develop. The challenges you face day to day are worth it when you can help make a difference to people’s lives. I would encourage anyone to make housing their career choice as it can be very rewarding.”

Elaine Hyslop, housing manager, added: “We are all so proud of Laura and her achievements and it is very rewarding to see Laura getting some well-deserved recognition for her hard work and dedication.

“Laura has achieved so much experience through her journey as an apprentice and now as a Housing Services Administrator. She has and will continue to develop skills and knowledge to help and support our tenants and service users and will be part of the sector’s housing professionals of the future.”

TELL delivers a range of work-based Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) as well as Modern Apprenticeship (MA) and Employability Fund (EF) programmes to help raise attainment levels and create opportunities for all by bridging skills gaps in the Scottish workplace.
