LAW’ers raise thousands for homeless charities in Edinburgh and Glasgow
An intrepid team of eleven fitness enthusiasts from employment law, HR and health & safety specialists Law At Work (LAW) took on the Rough Runner challenge to raise awareness and thousands of pounds for two homeless charities.
In total, £2,225 was raised for Streetwork in Edinburgh and Lodging House Mission in Glasgow, which both offer support, links to services and skills to enable people to get back on track.
Gus Smeaton, manager of Lodging House Mission, said: “We feed 90 - 100 people per day, 364 days per annum. That’s over 34,000 main meals alone. We are grateful to Law at Work not only for the great service they give but also for the charitable works they do. It’s always encouraging to see staff and employer doing charitable works together.”
This year, LAW has been focused on raising funds to support charities which provide vital services for Scotland’s homeless. This follows, official figures released by the Scottish Government in June showing the number of applications for homelessness status in Scotland has increased for the first time in nine years.
In August, the team of eleven lawyers took on the ‘Rough Runner’ challenge which was inspired by TV shows such as Gladiators and Total Wipeout. The course combined distance running with obstacles such as diving head-first down a 40m “Fearless Fall”, avoiding revolving arms of “The Revolution” and the mettle testing “Travelator”.
The groups fundraising efforts were supported by friends, families and colleagues to help take the total well past the £2,000 mark.
Daniel Gorry, deputy head of employment law at LAW, said: “The team started and ended the challenge together and are delighted to make what is hopefully a very helpful contribution to both charities.
“As you walk the streets of Glasgow and Edinburgh you cannot fail to be struck by the challenges of people living on the streets. The work Of Streetwork and Lodging House Mission is remarkable, and we are very pleased to be doing our small bit to raise money for these two incredible charities.”
