Building on the success of the launch last year, the event aims to give the public easier access to the resources they need to make properly informed housing decisions and will see a variety of events take place throughout September, culminating with Scottish Housing Day itself taking place on Thursday, 21st September.

A key theme for the day will include addressing the specific challenges and aspirations facing younger people in accessing housing. This will cover a broad spectrum of topics from MMR, help to buy, supply and understanding issues for parents who are still hosting grown-up offspring.

Other themes that will be explored include older people and the options that they have around living longer in the right kind of home, as well as raising awareness of the positive impact of legislative reform on raising standards in the private rented sector.

Following the success of last year’s very first official Scottish Housing Day, this year’s event is being led by a range of housing sector partners including the Chartered Institute of Housing in Scotland in partnership with Shelter Scotland, the Tenant Participatory Advisory Service Scotland (TPAS Scotland), the Association of Local Authority Chief Housing Officers (ALACHO), the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations (SFHA), the Tenants Forum, Homes for Scotland and the Scottish Association of Landlords (SAL),

Commenting on this year’s Scottish Housing Day, CIH Scotland executive director, Annie Mauger, said: “We want as many organisations as possible to get involved in Scottish Housing Day and to join with us to celebrate all that the amazing people who work in housing do, but also to communicate more effectively about the options that people have. We are particularly concerned about young people’s aspirations around having their own home and also as people live independently for longer, how older people can plan their housing choices. Also, we want to raise awareness of private renting and the benefits of legislative reform as so many more people are finding renting privately to be an option.”

Organisations who would like to take part are being encouraged to get in touch via a dedicated website to highlight what they are planning to do to mark Scottish Housing Day and to register their event on an official calendar. The day will be driven by local activity and social media using the dedicated Twitter account @scothousingday and the hash tag #scottishhousingday.
