Some of Midlothian and the Scottish Borders’ most vulnerable residents can make their hard earned cash stretch a little further thanks to funding for an initiative by Changeworks.

The environmental charity’s Canny Tenants project, which focuses on preventing debt, managing heating and electricity costs and budgeting, has been awarded £494,180 from the Big Lottery Fund.

The latest grant will help bring about positive change for people in challenging circumstances. Over the next five years the Canny Tenants’ project will be delivered in partnership with Eildon Housing Association, Melville Housing Association and Midlothian Council.

Helping over 1,000 residents before they have to make heat or eat choices, the Canny Tenants project will support those most in need, including people who are in debt, older people as well as those who have been homeless or in the care system. A wide range of support will be available from home visits, budget management training, helping tenants to understand the best ways save energy and use heating efficiently and advice on minimising food waste.

With 20 years’ experience of helping people who struggle with the cost of keeping their home warm or who are worried about their heating or electricity bills, people we see are at their wits end.

“We’re excited and looking forward to be working with our partners to help make tenants’ confident in managing their heating, electricity and food costs to ensure the best start in their new home.”
