Organised by Shettleston Housing Association and the Shettleston Community Growing Project, the event brought a range of activities and attractions to the Project’s site.

Shettleston chief executive, Tony Teasdale, said: “Our main aim is to provide a great day out for our tenants and the wider community. We’ve been working with the Growing Project for more than 10 years now and events like this give us a chance to showcase what we’re doing, providing opportunities for local people to learn how to grow their own fresh food, while at the same time bringing the community together to have some fun.

“It also gives us a chance to show what other services we provide to help improve people’s lives, whether that be help in reducing energy costs or debt advice.”

Shettleston Housing Association manages around 2500 houses in the east end of Glasgow. Its vision is to build thriving and prosperous local communities where all residents enjoy great homes and services, an attractive physical environment, and good life chances.

Margot Devaney of the growing project added: “The Gala Day has been a resounding success, bringing together neighbours and organisations for a day of celebration and connection. We have enjoyed live music and delicious food. Today has not only fostered a sense of connection but also highlighted the importance of green spaces in urban areas. A big thank you to all the volunteers and participants who made this day great possible.”

Local councillor Jill Pidgeon was one of the people who came along.

She commented: “I think events like this give the community the opportunity to get together, doing something fun. The past couple of years have been tough for people, so this gives us a chance to get out and show we are still very much a community.

“The support and dedication the volunteers and staff from the Association and Growing Project put into making this event happen is fantastic. It gives the community a chance to come together, to work together and play together.”
