Loreburn seeking volunteers for Later Living Fit for Life service
Loreburn Housing Association is recruiting volunteers across Dumfries & Galloway following the launch of its Later Living Fit for Life service.
Designed for those over 55, Loreburn’s seven Later Living developments allow residents to live comfortably, in a safe environment, knowing there is expert help on hand if needed.
Their brand-new Fit for Life initiative aims to tackle the impact Covid-19 has had on customers by reducing social isolation, building confidence, improving physical and mental well-being, and strengthening the Later Living community.
After securing a funding boost of £59k from the Scottish Government’s Communities Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund, Loreburn were able appoint a dedicated Volunteer & Activities Coordinator to oversee the service.
Bryony McCulloch, Loreburn’s volunteer & activities coordinator, said: “My role has been a real privilege, as I have the chance to bring new opportunities to customers in our Later Living developments.
“I’ve had the opportunity to meet with our customers face-to-face and hear about their passions and aspirations, which has enabled me to develop an inclusive activities programme tailored around their interests and abilities.”
Encouraging tenants to take part in covid-safe activities will help to tackle contemporary challenges such as physical inactivity, mental health issues and inequality to foster peaceful, inclusive, and resilient communities.
Loreburn is looking for a diverse range of enthusiastic people who can show empathy, compassion, trust and who have great listening skills.
Bryony added: “We want to give our tenants the chance to challenge themselves, try new things and remind them that they still have so much to give.
“Whatever your skills and interests, there’s a volunteering role for you. No experience is needed, and you will be trained and supported in your role.
“You’ll be helping to support our customers to live life to their full potential and allow them access the wider community with confidence.”
The Later Living Team at Loreburn have begun to work with local volunteers to help find ways of using their individual skills, talents and time to support others.
Heather Dorling, Later Living team manager, said: “This is an amazing opportunity for all involved, and something we have wanted to do for quite some time.
“We are so very grateful for the funding. This is going to bring some real benefits to our customers and indeed our team.”
From running an activities session to assisting on day trips, taking the time to volunteer is a key way of helping a lonely or socially isolated older person.
But a simple friendly chat over a coffee or phone call can make all the difference, too.
Sue Irving, director of housing services said: “I’m so pleased that we’re able to offer this fantastic new service to our Later Living customers who we know found COVID-19 restrictions and isolation very difficult.
“Volunteering is rewarding in so many ways, as well as being lots of fun, so I’d encourage anyone who has a little time to give, however small, to get in touch with Bryony or check out our website.
“I’d also like to thank our funders, because of this funding we’re going to be able to make a real and tangible difference to the quality of life of some of our older customers.”
