Two afternoon teas took place this week at Shiskine Place and Oran Place retirement housing developments in Maryhill.

They were the perfect curtain raiser for months of community-focused 40th anniversary activities designed to involve people at every opportunity.

The first Afternoon tea – with a vintage theme - complete with mouthwatering cakes and sandwiches was complemented at Shiskine Place by a visit from Glasgow Life, whose staff brought along “Reminiscing Kits” to remind the residents of days gone by in the city.

Long-serving Shiskine Place warden Alison Scott donned a beautifully-crafted waitress outfit to ensure the event had an authentic theme.

Colleagues Dawn Burns and Ann Fraser helped organise the event and served the residents with their Afternoon Tea. The second tea at Oran Place was due to take place on Thursday and was a much anticipated treat for local residents there.

Helen Donald, chair of the Shiskine Residents’ Association, praised the housing association for funding the celebratory afternoon teas and also construction firm CGC, which contributed to the funding through its “Afternoon Tea with CGC” initiative.

The Association said it was a suitable opener to the forthcoming celebration events throughout the year which will involve canal trips for residents of all ages, a trip to the seaside, garden events and fun days for all the family.

A key highlight is a special event on June 30 – the 40th anniversary of the day the Association was founded to be held in the historic and Victorian Maryhill Burgh Halls which it helped restore to its former glory.
