Maryhill Housing has paid a warm tribute to one of its Board members who has died after a short illness.

Alistair Goold was described this week as a “true servant of the community” and a dedicated supporter of the housing association movement.

He served on Maryhill’s Board and fulfilled the role of vice chair with passion and distinction.

Alistair was particularly well known as a member of the so-called “Mini Multis Residents’ Association” where he was chair.

The group took its name from the blocks of flats known locally by that name and which led the regeneration of their community in partnership with Maryhill Housing.

One of its most notable successes was the creation of a community garden and play area near the flats giving young families and green-fingered members of the community a much needed local facility.

He was thrilled to be present when the growing space and play park was opened just a year ago.

Paying tribute to Alistair, Roger Popplewell, chair of Maryhill Housing, said: “We mourn the loss of Alistair and send our deepest condolences to his family at this time of great sorrow.

“Like us, Alistair’s family will surely know of his devotion to helping others and his ready understanding of the role housing providers have in our communities which was borne out in his service to Maryhill Housing.

“His greatest success, of course, was leading the local residents’ group in securing a huge amount of funding for their community garden and play park. Alistair’s legacy is now there for all to see.”

Newly-appointed chief executive of Maryhill Housing, Bryony Willett, added: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Alistair whose dedication to Maryhill Housing and the wider Maryhill community was inspirational.

“He worked so hard for the good of others and like so many people who devote much of their time to serving on housing association boards and management committees, he was driven by a great sense of duty and selflessness. We shall miss him greatly.”

Alistair’s funeral will take place on Thursday 9 March at Maryhill Crematorium at 2.15 pm.
