A Maryhill Housing retirement housing development played host to a visit from miniature Shetland ponies and Newfoundland dogs this week.

The two cuddle-friendly miniature Shetland ponies and two equally-adorable Newfoundland dogs from Therapy Ponies Scotland met the residents at Shiskine Place and were an instant hit.

Shiskine Place has an active programme for keeping the residents young at heart including a varied calendar of social activities. However it was the first time they welcomed ponies Applejack and Flicker and Newfoundlands Winston and Arthur.

Resident Babs Jackson said: “It was a day to remember. The animals were so friendly. They clearly like cuddles!”

There is growing evidence that engagement between older people and animals delivers therapeutic benefits.

The relaxing demeanour of the animals helps put people at ease – especially if there is an existing fear of them.

Alison Scott, warden at Shiskine Place, said: “The visit was even more successful than we imagined it would be. The animals were adorable and our residents took to them right away. We were sorry to see them go!”
