Lovell recently welcomed schoolchildren from Lawfield Primary School to Oakwood Edge in Mayfield to learn about the importance of safety on construction sites ahead of the school holidays.

Oakwood Edge is a mixed-tenure development with 156 new energy-efficient homes for the area. A total of 39 are available for social rent from Melville Housing Association, with the remaining 117 to be sold by Lovell. The new community is growing, with many families having already moved into the 2, 3 and 4-bedroom homes.

During the visit, the children were given a safety briefing before having the opportunity to take part in hands-on activities. They helped lay paving stones in one of the newly constructed streets, observed large construction machinery in action, and toured a completed home.

Each pupil was equipped on the day with a mini hard hat and high-visibility vest to highlight the importance of health and safety in construction areas. The tour also offered the pupils a glimpse into life in the newly built community and the potential careers in construction.

Lovell contracts manager Andy Hamilton said: “We know it’s our responsibility to not only build high-quality new homes but to contribute to each community where we build. We were delighted to show the children from Lawfield Primary School around the development to help them understand how dangerous construction sites can be, especially during school holidays when they might be tempted to explore.”

Development manager at Melville Housing Association, Neil Edgar, said: “Alongside Lovell, Melville Housing Association is passionate about creating safer neighbourhoods, and so it’s wonderful to know that the pupils from Lawfield Primary School left with a deeper understanding of the need for safety on construction sites.

“The 39 high-quality, affordable homes at Oakwood Edge are a very welcome boost to the local area and simply wouldn’t be possible without the crucial funding from the Scottish Government and the dedicated support of our partners. To continue making significant progress in addressing the housing crisis ongoing collaboration will be key in the years ahead.”

Lawfield Primary School play therapist Gavin Menzies added: “The visit to the Lovell housing development at Oakwood Edge was not only educational but also a lot of fun for the children, and the sunny weather certainly helped. The hands-on experiences were great, and the children now have a much better understanding of the potential dangers on construction sites and the importance of staying safe.”
