Mount Florida Bowling Club flats plan rejected
Councillors have refused a developer’s plan to build flats at a former Glasgow bowling green.
Noah Developments had lodged plans to build 40 flats across two blocks of five floors at the Mount Florida Bowling Club site on Carmunnock Road.
Glasgow City Council’s planning applications committee refused the application after concerns were raised over the loss of community amenity and the design not being in keeping with the area.
More than 600 objections were received over the residential proposal but also 120 letters of support.
A proposal by local campaigners to turn the site into a community sports and leisure facility, which had attracted around 160 letters of support, was previously approved by the committee.
Ahead of the hearing on Tuesday, Mount Florida Community Trust, which is behind the community plan, told Scottish Housing News that developers have to stop “getting easy pickings on bowling greens”.
Trust spokesperson Allan Munro said: “These places are the soul of communities and if the correct people are given the opportunity to take ownership of these spaces, great things can be done. In this time of great hardship, more than ever before we need these spaces to be protected and not developed. In this area we already have developments at the old Scottish Power Offices, Inverlair Avenue, Holmlea Primary School and the development at the Victoria Infirmary.
“We must stand up against developments that provide little value and only make profit.”
The bowling club voted last year to sell the land to Noah Developments, which can appeal against the planning refusal.
Council planners had stated that both applications could be given planning permission as they each comply with the relevant development policies.
