Since his passing a few months ago, the team at New Gorbals have been working hard to make sure that Michael gets the tribute he deserves.

Michael was a big football fan and keen player, so his colleagues organised a 5 a side football tournament as a tribute to him. The Michael Houghton Memorial Cup is now established, and the first annual event took place on the 23rd of April 2016.

The day was supported by fellow housing associations and contractors who came together to honour Michael. Fifteen teams competed in a 5 a side football tournament, and helped to raise over £2860 on the day for The Brain Tumour Charity. The generous donations will go towards helping others to overcome this illness in the future. New Gorbals would like to thank everyone who came along and made the day a fantastic success, including members of Michael’s family. Congratulations also go to the Bell Group, who were the first winners of the cup.

As well as the football tournament, six New Gorbals colleagues are taking part in the Edinburgh Half Marathon on the 29th May. The New Gorbals Harriers are raising money for both The Brain Tumour Charity and Breast Cancer Care. Any donations will be warmly received for these two charities, and will help to spur on the runners as they take on this challenge.
