New homes and student accommodation planned at Leith tramway depot
An online consultation has been launched for a mixed-use redevelopment of the former Leith Walk Tramway Depot.
A mix of 19 affordable homes and 27 private flats are planned for the brownfield site between Leith Walk and Halmyre Street, to the east of 139 Leith Walk, as well as a commercial unit and 235-bed student accommodation block.
The proposal is one of three parcels of brownfield land that forms the Leith Walk / Halmyre Street Place Brief, a masterplan prepared by the City of Edinburgh Council to shape future development on these sites and approved by the planning committee in September last year.
Applicant CW Properties said in a consultation statement: “The proposal is for a high-quality development in an urban setting that includes mainstream housing, affordable housing, commercial space, and purpose-built accommodation for students. The variety of residential tenures and uses will instil a mixed and balanced community with a range of age brackets and social backgrounds.
“The objective is to create a new welcoming environment that can be utilised by both the future residents and the existing population in line with the desired outcomes of the Place Brief.
“The site is currently occupied by a car park for the NHS and a derelict warehouse, formerly used by the Scottish Government for storage. CWP will reconfigure the NHS car park and demolish the warehouse building to make way for the new development.”
