New Housing Committee approved by Angus Council

A new Housing Committee has been established following the approval of Angus Council at its meeting last month.

The important step highlights the council’s commitment to addressing housing-related matters with an enhanced focus and urgency and has been driven by the recognition of a Housing Emergency in Angus.

The Housing Committee will set to work in January 2025 and will oversee the council’s housing strategy, policy, and improvement plans – a remit that includes all housing-related matters that were previously overseen by the Communities Committee. This change reflects the vital importance of housing in supporting Angus’ communities and provides a platform for better tenant engagement and regular scrutiny by elected members.

Newly appointed convener of the Housing Committee, Cllr Beth Whiteside, said: “The establishment of the Housing Committee is a vital step in ensuring that housing remains a top priority in Angus.

“This committee will allow for greater focus and accountability, empowering us to address the housing emergency and deliver on our promise to tenants, to deliver places people are proud to call home.”

To ensure tenants have a voice in shaping housing decisions, three tenant representatives will also be appointed to the Housing Committee in a non-voting capacity. These representatives will bring invaluable lived experience and insights to the discussions.

Constituted tenant groups from across Angus will be invited to nominate individuals by submitting a written request. Nominees must reside within Angus and meet specific criteria outlined by the council. The Housing Committee will review nominations and select three representatives and substitutes are also permitted.
