New housing development plans for former Dundee care home
A new housing development will be built by Persimmon Homes on the Wellburn House site in Lochee if Dundee City Council approves the plans.
Wellburn House will be demolished and replaced with terraced, detached and semi-detached houses, subject to planning permission.
Persimmon Homes have held a community consultation event at the Lochee United function suite. The firm sad the response to the plans has been positive.
Persimmon Homes have not revealed the number of the homes which will be built on the site and have said this information will be announced when the planning application is lodged with the council in November.
Persimmon’s north Scotland land director, Iain McGoldrick, said: “It is still early days. We’re consulting people on the principle of having a housing development on this site. We feel that the market is pretty strong in the area and that the area can sustain the development. There is a demand for housing in Lochee. The development will comprise a range of houses, from two-bedroom terraced houses to three and four-bedroom detached and semi-detached ones.”
He also said will be another chance for the public to voice their opinions on the development when the planning application is submitted.
He said he did not anticipate any problems with traffic in the busy Lochee area. He said: “There shouldn’t be a significant impact on the local roads network. As part of the planning process, we will have to provide a transport statement and any issues will be dealt with at that stage.”
Wellburn House, located on Liff Road was a care home for over 150 years until it was closed by the Diocese of Dunkeld in 2017. The site was bought by the diocese from the Little Sisters of the Poor and closed after inspectors found issues with the building’s gas and water supplies.
Following this, the organisation has maintained the 7.7-acre site at a yearly cost of £60,000, but a conditional sale to Persimmon Homes upon the approval of planning permission has been agreed.
Lochee resident George Donnelly, 79, was one of those who turned out for the consultation event on Thursday. He said: “We could do with more houses in Lochee but they do need to be at an affordable price. Wellburn is at the heart of Lochee and a really nice place to have a house.”
