New Scots and Elderpark tenants team up for a taste of Burns
Elderpark Housing paid tribute to Robert Burns with its 11th annual Burns Supper and gave some new Scots their first introduction to The Bard.
Now a much-anticipated annual event, Elderpark teamed up with a local initiative known as the Govan Community Project to host the event.
It seeks to support refugees and people seeking asylum across Glasgow by building a strong community based on equality, mutual respect, support, and integration.
The occasion held in the Kinning Park Complex was well attended by tenants and the wider community alike. They tucked into typical fare of haggis and rounded it all off with entertainment and dancing.
The event took the form of a traditional celebration of Burns with the star attraction of the haggis being piped in. Talented piper David Rice wowed the audience with his piping skills. The young musician is training to be a music teacher, lives locally and attends the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Jonathan Giddings-Reid, Elderpark’s community regeneration officer, said: “Celebrating Burns Night is an important occasion for the community we serve and something we all look forward to each year. This year for the first time we teamed up with the Govan Community Project with whom we have worked closely in the past.
“Its inspiring work across our community with people who have come to Scotland – often under challenging circumstances – speaks for itself.
“Elderpark recognises the importance of companionship and togetherness – especially for some of our more isolated or vulnerable tenants – and we hope the Burns Supper was enjoyed by everyone.”
Among those attending were new Scots from places like Gaza and Iran who have found a new life in Scotland.
Elderpark chairperson Maureen McDonald who attended the event called it a “wonderful occasion to bring people together”.
Maureen said: “Everyone had a great time and the Elderpark Burns Supper is an annual treat which celebrates a great Scot. This was our 11th year of holding the supper and we raise a glass to many more.”
