Work is already well underway as part of the council’s £314 million five-year housing capital investment programme, which will deliver a range of improvements for council tenants including renewable energy technology, additional fire safety measures and the demolition of more tower blocks.

A number of projects were agreed at the council’s housing and regeneration committee which will help deliver ambitious improvement and regeneration for people across North Lanarkshire.

Carbon neutral technology will be used, including the installation of solar panels and the development of renewable heating systems which will reduce energy consumption and help the council meet its net zero targets.

Delivering triple glazing windows, new kitchens, bathrooms and improved roofing and rendering in council homes is also continuing.

The demolition of a number of towers will deliver space for regeneration with low-rise blocks at Gowkthrapple in Wishaw and Shawhead in Coatbridge scheduled. High-rise towers at Coursington, Allan and Draffen Towers in Motherwell are also due for demolition during 2022. The installation of new fire doors, lift replacements and sprinkler systems is also continuing in towers not part of the current phase of the demolition programme.

“Our commitment is to provide high quality housing for our council tenants which will meet their needs now and in the future. A key focus is meeting out net zero targets, reducing our tenants’ energy consumption to save them money and to make homes as safe, secure and sustainable.

“There are many improvement projects already underway, and this continued investment will enable us to reinvigorate communities, improve homes and bringing substantial benefits for local people.”
