Over 250 new homes within Glasgow Meat Market to be handed over in May
The first tranche of over 250 homes within the historic Glasgow Meat Market development is expected to be handed over to customers next month.
Close to 150 years after the market on Bellgrove Road opened, it’s hoped the development will bring back a vibrancy to an area that has long been missing.
Prior to housing association Home Group Scotland taking over the site to deliver the mid market rental homes, the six acre site had been derelict for over 10 years.
Now, the first phase of the development is expected to breath a renewed vigour into the area, as well to further help connect the east end of Glasgow to the city centre.
The overall two-phase plan for the meat market will deliver around 500 homes, including the 251 mid market rent in phase 1. Home Group Scotland are currently exploring the potential for the next phase.
The Glasgow Meat Market was established in 1879, and initially housed an inn, sheds and accommodation for sheep, bullocks and other livestock. It was one of the last remaining markets in the country until it closed in the 1980s.
Elsa Brailey, head of development for Home Group in Scotland, said: “It is great to see this historic site, left untouched for way too long, turned into a fantastic set of homes that will enhance such an important community.
“We are delighted with the design and quality of the homes and look forward to people moving in and setting down long term roots here.
“The fact we have delivered these homes, and many others recently across the city, is down to the strong and close working partnership we have with Glasgow City Council. And we look forward to delivering many more.”
The Meat Market project is the latest development from Home Group in Glasgow. The housing association has created the stunning Muirskeith development in the Southside, the iconic Flemish inspired flats in Ashtree Road in Pollokshaws, as well as the complete regeneration of a major housing estate in East Balornock.
