Persimmon donates £5,000 to Strathaven Rugby Club
Persimmon West Scotland, which is creating new communities in the nearby villages, announced the Strathaven Rugby Club as one of its community champions – and is supporting the club with a £5,000 donation.
The money from the five-star homebuilder will be used to purchase new kit and equipment for the women’s team.
Strathaven Rugby Club, which has over 300 players across their various teams and age groups, has set their sights on growing their newly formed women’s team. The team has already picked up silverware since forming in January 2024 and aspires to growing women’s rugby across South Lanarkshire.
Strathaven Rugby Club was formed 40 years ago this year and plans to add to the already fantastic facilities at the club.
The group received the £1,000 donation through Persimmon’s Community Champions initiative, which supports charities and good causes in the areas the company operates in. The programme has seen more than £360,000 donated across Scotland in the last five years.
Sinclair McLaren, Strathaven Rugby Club sponsorship & advertising coordinator, and Women’s Team Coach, said: “It really is fantastic seeing the way everyone has been supporting the ladies team and the buzz around them is unreal. This money will help kit them out for the new season.
“It will also help us kit out one of our Midis teams, so thanks to Persimmon for the donation as it makes a huge difference to a club like ours. It’s our 40th Anniversary year, so adding the ladies team to our club is awesome and being named as one of Persimmon’s Community Champions just tops it off.”
Barry Martin, women’s team coach, and Jo Martin, women’s team captain, added: “We echo Sinclair’s comments, a cash injection like this means a lot to a club like ours and the investment into women’s rugby is amazing. We can’t wait to see the new kit for the coming season.”
Chris Logan, Persimmon West Scotland managing director, commented: “As one of South Lanarkshire’s largest home builders, we’re committed to investing in local communities and I’m really pleased we’re able to support the club with this donation.
“Clubs like Strathaven Rugby Club are always heavily dependent on volunteers and donations to keep them running and I hope our donation helps them continue to have such a positive impact on the local community.”
