Plans for 250 homes on Bannockburn battlefield site
Developers have submitted plans for up to 250 homes on greenbelt land considered to have been part of the site where the Battle of Bannockburn was fought.
Hallam Land Management has made an outline application to Stirling Council planners for the land near the famous Bannockburn itself, The Herald has reported.
Hallam Land Management insisted the plans would not have “a significant adverse impact on the historic environment” and promised to expand the Bannockburn Heritage Trail by introducing a new footpath network and interpretation boards.
It has also pledged to carry out extensive archaeological investigations to further help with understanding the battle.
The developer acknowledged the council, when responding to its Local Development Plan submissions, had raised concerns about the impact on views, particularly to and from Cats Craig and the monument complex at the National Trust site.
However, the applicant, which engaged archaeological consultants, said these concerns could be overcome and they can provide “clear evidence” that housing could exist alongside existing and allocated developments along Glasgow Road and would not interfere with views.
Historic Environment Scotland, which is responsible for battlefield designation, said: “We are currently considering the impact of the development on the Battle of Bannockburn Inventory Battlefield Site and nearby A-listed buildings.
“We intend to respond to Stirling Council on or before June 16.”
