Plans submitted to convert north Glasgow building into student accommodation

The proposals concern the A-listed former North British Locomotive Company offices, Springburn.

The 1908 building in Flemington Street became a college and was sold for use as a business centre in 2006, reGlasgow reports.

A 410-bedroom complex would be built using the original building plus a new four-storey, 88-bedrooom annexe. Under the new plans, the building would include a gym, cinema and games rooms, and garden areas.

A statement submitted with the planning application reads: “The proposal is to refurbish and extend the existing main block.

“The alterations to the existing building are limited to internal lightweight partitioning, new services, formation of new doorways to a proportion of the existing cellular offices to the north block, replacement of later steel framed windows, overhaul of existing timber windows to the north facade, and installation of solar panels to the existing roofs.”

The annexe would adjoin the west gable, on a site that was previously occupied by tenement housing.

Earlier this year, the owner withdrew proposals to demolish large parts of the building in favour of developing a student accommodation concept.
