Plans to demolish flood-hit Edinburgh pub for new apartments

A developer has taken ownership of a historic Edinburgh pub with a view to delivering 21 new apartments on the site.

The Longstone Inn was forced to close in July 2020 after concerns about erosion caused by the nearby Water of Leith.

Now plans lodged by architects Fouin & Bell and QB Wood call for the property to be demolished to make way for a new apartment building.

The proposals would also see flood walls repaired with new sheet piling, raising the site level above the present flood line.

In a statement, the applicant wrote: “The existing site is an eyesore and at risk of further damage from future flooding events and cannot be left in its current state.

“The new proposal would upgrade the river walls of both the Murrauburn and Water of Leith in accordance with 1 in 200-year flood risk and the council’s Water of Leith flood prevention scheme.”
