The project, organised by the Kelburn Action Group, was supported by employees from affordable housing contractor Wates Living Space and River Clyde Homes.

Volunteers installed 24 large flower-filled planters in the local football park and play areas to help reinvigorate the estate and to prevent cars from driving or parking across these valuable community areas. With the help of Parklea Project - Branching Out, who built the planters provided for the local children to create their own designs, each was decorated with the name of the child that created it. The group also worked hard to free play areas of rubbish, filling over 15 bags.

The team from Wates Living Space also presented Kelburn Action Group with a £500 donation on behalf of Wates Giving. This will help the group to continue its campaign to regenerate the local area.

The project formed part of Wates’ annual Community Day, which sees 2,000 employees nationwide donate a day of their time to make a tangible difference to the communities where they are working. This year, local projects across the UK received over 4,700 hours of Wates’ time.

Kerry Condron, business development manager at Wates Living Space, said: “Community Day encourages our employees and supply chain partners to make a difference and support the communities in which we are working. It’s important for us to give something back and to leave a positive legacy on in these areas and Community Day is one way of doing this. Not to mention, it’s a lot of fun at the same time.”

The event was facilitated by Russell Smith, cleaner, greener neighbourhoods manager at River Clyde Homes.

He added: “Our Working in Neighbourhoods (WIN) programme, means that all River Clyde Homes staff now have 14 hours each year to create community benefit. Having the chance to work with our partners at Wates Living Space and with the local community in Kelburn has been a great experience.

“The idea for the project came directly from the Kelburn Action Group. They want to make a difference to the local environment by maintaining space that is both attractive and a focal point for activities.”

Wates Living Space is contracted by River Clyde Homes to undertake internal and external refurbishment works across its housing stock in Inverclyde.
