Provost puts seal on Barrhead Housing’s dinosaur-themed fun day
More than 200 people, including East Renfrewshire Provost Mary Montague, flocked to a dinosaur-themed fun day at Dunterlie Community Centre in Barrhead.
Dino Day was organised by Barrhead Housing and Happy Dunterlie, a partnership of community groups and local organisations.
Shay Young, community investment officer at Barrhead Housing, said: “It’s really important for us to be involved in partnerships like this and to support local volunteers and groups to do so much for their community.”
As well as volunteers in various dinosaur costumes, the event featured everything from face-painting, games and glitter tattoos to dino-themed arts and crafts and V.R. activities, as well as free ice cream and chips.
Councillor Montague, in her introduction, emphasised the importance and value of community groups and volunteers delivering such much-needed activities.
Happy Dunterlie tackles the cost of school holidays by providing free activities and food to local children and families during school holidays. It is funded by the Corra Foundation and East Renfrewshire Participatory Budgeting.
Happy Dunterlie volunteer Cara Docherty, said: “We know how expensive the school holidays can be for families. That’s why it’s important for us to deliver completely free activities for local families, so no one is left out.”
Dino Day marked the end of Happy Dunterlie’s summer programme. Dozens of children aged two to 14 participated in activities, including two Nerf Battle sessions at the Waterworks and a den-building session at Dunterlie Resource Centre.
Barrhead Housing contractor MSi Scotland provided food, as part of its community benefits scheme, for the more than 150 snack bags handed out at the three sessions.
Shay Young added: “These events couldn’t happen without the hard work of volunteers.
“Happy Dunterlie is always looking for new people to help out. Anyone interested in volunteering can become involved through Barrhead Housing or by contacting Happy Dunterlie directly through their Facebook page.”
