£314m investment to improve council housing in North Lanarkshire
Communities across North Lanarkshire are continuing to see improvements in housing standards as the local authority invests £314 million in council homes across the area.
The wide-ranging five-year Housing Revenue Account (HRA) Capital Programme aims to provide high quality, safe and sustainable properties for council tenants. A number of projects are already underway or nearing completion, with plans in place to accelerate works through to 2026.
The next phase of HRA Capital Programme, approved at a recent meeting of North Lanarkshire Council’s housing committee, covers a number of areas with key priorities identified in the coming financial year including:
- Installation of new heating systems using advanced technologies to enhance energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
- Solar panel installations with over 550 installations completed by March 2024 and plans for over 1000 more during the current financial year.
- Improving insulation including loft, cavity wall and thermal upgrading to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon footprint.
- Roofing and rendering upgrades including non-traditional properties such as Swedish Timber style houses.
- Rolling replacement programme for windows, doors, bathrooms and kitchens across identified areas.
- Replacement of lead pipework to ensure water safety for residents.
- Tower sprinkler system installations and lift improvements.
Councillor Michael McPake, convener of housing, explained: “It is vital we continue to invest in improving our existing housing stock and improving the quality of life for our tenants.
“This significant investment highlights our commitment to provide safe a sustainable housing for our residents now and in the future. We are focusing on energy efficiency, environmental sustainability and improving the living standards for our communities.”
