Queens Cross vice chair Sadie Gordon wins 2nd annual Mary Barbour Award
An award which aims to recognise female campaigners in the city of Glasgow has been awarded to Sadie Gordon, vice chair of Queens Cross Housing Association.
Established in 2016 by Parkhead Housing Association in association with Wheatley Group, the 2nd annual Mary Barbour Award was awarded at a prestigious event at Glasgow City Chambers on August 25.
Former winner of the Partick Thistle Football Club Community Champion award, Sadie has been a Queens Cross tenant for 44 years.
Asked why she has always been so involved in her local community, she said: “I was brought up to be hardworking and caring.
“I’ve always loved my area, my friends and my neighbours. Their problem is my problem. I’ve always said if you have a voice, then use it and talk for my neighbours who maybe don’t have any confidence to speak up.”
Sadie’s tireless work has included the establishment of a stream of successful youth engagement projects including summer camps, school breakfast clubs and acting as chair for an organisation called Young People’s Future. The group work with children and young people aged 5-18 years. They provide drop-in based diversionary activities in Possilpark, Lambhill, Westercommon and Hamiltonhill in North Glasgow.
Sadie was presented with her award by last year’s winner Anna Stuart and Lord Provost Eva Bolander at a Civic Reception in the Banqueting Suite of the City Chambers.
Parkhead Housing Association CEO, Jim Strang, said: “We are delighted to have another worthy winner of the Mary Barbour Award in Sadie, her tireless work should not go unnoticed and it’s clear that Sadie is a massive asset to her community.”
