Regeneration to complete famous street
A missing link in one of Scotland’s most famous streets will be restored thanks to a £60 million regeneration project.
Sanctuary Scotland Housing Association will reinstate a 200 metre section of Glasgow’s Argyle Street in Anderston.
The section was lost in the 1960s when Anderston’s tenements were replaced with flatted blocks.
Having demolished the blocks Sanctuary Scotland will restore the street plan and build a further 206 homes.
Peter Martin, Sanctuary’s Group director, said: “For 50 years these flatted blocks wiped a chunk of Argyle Street from the map.
“It is fitting the final piece of Sanctuary’s £60 million regeneration jigsaw in Anderston will restore the missing link.
“Our plans reinstate this section of Argyle Street, creating an attractive pedestrian thoroughfare to Finnieston.
“The transformation of Anderston has reinvigorated the community and shows how successful inner-city regeneration can be.”
The 206 new flats near Glasgow’s trendy Finnieston district will be a mix of social rent and mid-market rent.
These flats will bring more families to Anderston and take the total number of new regeneration homes to 540.
This £26 million final phase is due to complete in summer 2018.
Anderston’s award-winning regeneration has only been possible with the support of Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Government.
Councillor George Redmond, executive member for jobs, business and investment at Glasgow City Council, said: “This will be a fantastic new housing development for Anderston, bringing family homes to an area which has been transformed in recent years.
“Glasgow City Council is delighted to be a partner of Sanctuary Scotland Housing Association in this regeneration project, and I look forward to these new homes being occupied in 2018.”
Construction giant CCG has been Sanctuary’s site contractor throughout Anderston’s award-winning regeneration.
Alastair Wylie, chairman and chief executive of CCG, said: “We are delighted to continue our partnership with Sanctuary Scotland to deliver the final phase of one of Glasgow’s largest regeneration schemes.
“We have worked with Sanctuary since the first phase commenced in 2008. We are proud to have delivered high quality, affordable homes using Off-Site Modern Methods of Construction.”
