A Scottish Government report that shows landlords still have work to do to improve Gypsy/Traveller sites has been welcomed by the Scottish Housing Regulator.

The Gypsy/Traveller progress report revealed that not all sites will meet the new minimum standards by June 2018.

According to the self-assessment returns, two sites – Angus and Falkirk – met the standards across the board at the time of the survey and information gathered in the review indicates that 19 out of 26 sites will meet the site standards by June 2018. However, in a number of areas where site providers have said that they meet the standard, the information from site residents does not support this.

Publishing the report, cabinet secretary for communities, social security and equalities, Angela Constance, said: “The Scottish Housing Regulator has a statutory role in this and must play a part – ensuring social landlords meet the standards which are now part of the Scottish Social Housing Charter and that all site providers maintain their sites to these standards.”

Christine MacLeod, director of regulation at the Scottish Housing Regulator, added: “Gypsy/Travellers should be able to access good quality services, and we expect social landlords’ sites to meet the new standards. We will write to social landlords immediately after the June deadline to establish whether they meet the standards. We will engage with individual landlords if we are not satisfied that the site standards are being met.”
