Sanctuary Group acquires Glasgow hospital site
The former Victoria Infirmary site in Glasgow is to be redeveloped into new homes after the site was sold to the Sanctuary Group.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) said it was impressed with the not-for-profit care provider’s vision for the 9.5 acre site which was selected following a “robust and detailed evaluation process”.
The site attracted considerable interest from house builders and development companies when it was put on the market in October last year following the transfer of the services on the site to the new Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.
Sanctuary will now progress with pre-planning application discussions with Glasgow City Council and the local community. They are proposing retaining a number of heritage features on the site while providing modern, stylish home for first time buyers, families and older buyers.
Peter Martin, group director development, Sanctuary Group, said: “We are delighted to be buying the old Victoria site and are committed to listening to local communities to select the best development solution.
“Our plans are to retain the key heritage features of the site while delivering a beautiful place to live.
“The development will also create much needed jobs and we look forward to beginning this exciting project.”
David Loudon, director of facilities and capital planning, NHSGGC, added: “The former Victoria Infirmary site has been one of our most high profile disposals so far.
“Its successful sale means we have achieved the best value for money for the site, the site being brought back into economic use and the proceeds reinvested in the delivery of front line services.”
The full consultation programme will be announced in the coming weeks.
