SBHA welcomes guests to new-build site in Hawick
Scottish Borders Housing Association (SBHA) welcomed guests to one of its new-build projects in Burnfoot, Hawick this week.
The visit was part of a series of events planned on 23rd July to launch the new South of Scotland Housing Action Plan.
This initiative, spearheaded by the South of Scotland Regional Economic Partnership (REP), aims to address the pressing need for more and diverse housing options in the region. The Action Plan’s launch marks a crucial step in addressing the housing challenges in the South of Scotland, outlining ten actionable steps to be implemented over the next two years, with the aim of attracting more residents and bolstering the local construction sector.
To mark the launch of the Action Plan, housing minister Paul McLennan, along with members of the REP and representatives from SBHA, SBHA’s board of management and Scottish Borders Tenants Organisation, visited the site at Fairhurst Drive.
SBHA is currently working with The JR Group to deliver 12 new homes at Fairhurst Drive and a further four homes nearby at Leishman Place. Whilst in attendance the minister highlighted the critical role housing plays in fostering economic growth and sustaining vibrant rural communities, recognising that each area of Scotland has its own unique challenges.
Julia Mulloy, SBHA chief executive and member of the Strategic Action Group on Housing, expressed strong support for the Action Plan, stating: “The Housing Action Plan highlights how important housing is as part of a strong economy.
“SBHA is committed to helping make this plan a success over the next two years, using our strengths and partnerships to deliver much-needed affordable housing. We were thrilled to showcase our project in Burnfoot alongside The JR Group, further highlighting our work to improve the quality and availability of housing in the South of Scotland.”
Andrew Dallas, projects director of The JR Group, added: “This project has been our first working with Scottish Borders Housing Association in the region and it’s been a fantastic opportunity to be part of such an exciting project in the Burnfoot Community. It is great to see the Action Plan launched to help bring more high quality, sustainable homes to the area.
“It is something we are very passionate about and therefore we are delighted to help SBHA deliver. During the projects, we have called on the expertise of the local area, prioritising working with local suppliers, subcontractors and businesses to ensure that we can create a fantastic mix of homes tailored for families and older residents alike that meets the needs of the community.”
The homes at Fairhurst Drive and Leishman Place are designed to meet a variety of housing needs. They range from 1 bed to 4 bed and include some single-storey homes for those with limited mobility. Both sites are progressing well, with completion expected in early 2025.
