Learning about nature was one of the lessons for youngsters from St Cuthbert’s Primary School as they paid a visit to Ruchill’s newly-opened “pop up” allotments.

The school is located not far from the allotments which have been an instant hit with local people – allowing them to grow their own produce while transforming a disused piece of land.

Very young children from Benview Early Years nursery also came along.

Organised by Maryhill Housing Association, the event is the second in just a few weeks as the drive continues to promote the new community facility.

Maryhill’s community regeneration manager, Ruth Adam, said: “We hope the youngsters found the visit interesting. The allotments are here for all ages to use and enjoy. Learning about nature and growing things was certainly of interest to the children.”

A number of activities were laid on for the children including a Smoothie bike where pedal power was used to create mouth-watering drinks which the kids soon consumed. This was delivered by a team from Glasgow Science Centre.

An insect hunt and a tour of the allotments also proved a big success.
