Shire Housing Association apprentice wins award for community challenge
Shire Housing Association’s Modern Apprentice Jayden McWilliam won an award for “Best Presentation” in the local Developing the Young Workforce Community Challenge.
Apprentices from employers across Ayrshire were invited to enter the challenge run by Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce’s Developing the Young Workforce team. Recognising the impact it would have on people, Jayden decided to run a Cost of Living Crisis support event.
He invited stallholders from Home Energy Scotland, East Ayrshire Council, Fedcap Employment and Shire’s Financial Inclusion team to attend and provide advice and support to members of the local community. He worked with Shire partners and community groups to deliver the project.
As part of the challenge, Jayden had to submit a portfolio on the project and then deliver a presentation to a panel of judges. All of the other entrants had larger teams of apprentices, Jayden was the only one on his own.
Claire Donnelly, head of corporate services, said: “We are very proud of Jayden. He recognised how much of a problem rising costs are to our communities and found a way to help.”
Following the success of his event, Jayden and Shire plan to hold further sessions in other locations throughout East Ayrshire.
