Sheltered housing development marks 25 happy years in Maryhill
A sheltered housing complex in Maryhill has celebrated its 25th birthday with a party to mark the quarter century.
Shiskine Place sheltered housing development opened its doors to its first tenants on April 29 1991.
And this week the residents paid tribute to the success of the development which, like all sheltered housing, combines companionship with independent living.
Until a few years ago Shiskine was Maryhill Housing Association’s only sheltered housing when a second development located at the other end of Maryhill and known as Oran Place was added in the stock transfer from Glasgow Housing Association.
Remarkably, Maryhill employee Alison Scott has been a warden at Shiskine throughout the 25 years - joining after a career in nursing.
Chief executive Lynn Wassell, who attended the event, said she was struck by the warmth of the relationship between residents and the difference that Alison has made and continues to make upon their lives.
Residents enjoyed reminiscing across the last 25 years, looking at photographs and reuniting with former wardens and housing team members who came along.
Alison, along with tenant Helen Donald, cut a celebration cake in the development’s communal lounge to mark the anniversary.
In her speech, Helen who came to Shiskine exactly 17 years to the day of the 25th anniversary, told tenants that Alison and fellow Warden Alice Chalmers who retired recently had gone “beyond the call of duty” in caring for and supporting the residents.
Helen added: “Shiskine is a wonderful place. Our Wardens have been like guardian angels to us and everyone who lives here appreciates what they have done and what a great place this is.”
Shiskine was officially opened by the former Scottish Office minister Lord James Douglas-Hamilton in 1991.
