Specially designed sheltered housing complex reaches 30th birthday
Dundee’s first sheltered housing complex built specifically to meet the needs of the city’s Chinese community has celebrated its 30th anniversary.
Pine Court, in the west of the city, celebrated the milestone with an event which brought together residents, founders and community members.
First opened in 1994 by Home in Scotland and Dundee City Council, Pine Court was designed to provide housing for Chinese seniors. Over the years, it has become a thriving multicultural community.
Marking the 30-year milestone, residents and original project founders joined the Home in Scotland team for a cake-cutting ceremony at Pine Court, before enjoying a meal at a local Manchurian Chinese restaurant, which had also played host to the 20-year anniversary a decade earlier.
Lee Yin Cheung, 90, has lived at Pine Court since its first year, having moved in back in August 1994.
She said: “My flat is very spacious and in a great location. I am happy to spend my time here in my retirement.
“It is not like sheltered housing where residents are checked on all the time. I am self-sufficient and can do my own things. I can cook my own food, which is a big part of our culture.”
Shiu Ching Cheng, 83, has also been a resident since August 1994 and added: “I have benefitted greatly from living here, as we all speak the same language. We all look after each other.
“We have the same cultural backgrounds and interests. Our monthly meetings with the housing manager and interpreter are very handy to raise any issues with the complex.”
Bryony Willett, director of Home in Scotland said: “Seeing Pine Court continue to be a thriving home to Dundee’s Chinese community 30 years on is brilliant.
“At Home in Scotland, we are committed to embracing local heritage and diversity in our developments and schemes, and we hope to see Pine Court continue to be an example of this for many more years to come.”
