Student accommodation approved at former STV Glasgow site
A 16-floor block of 432 purpose-built student flats in Glasgow city centre has been approved by planners.
The L-shaped Broadway Two building at the top of Renfield Street will join the recently completed office block and hotel in phase one. The vacant site was previously home to studios for STV.
The development is being led by ES Renfield Ltd, part of McAleer & Rushe Property, and designed by Cooper Cromar.
The final plans contained several changes from the designs presented during the public consultation, with the upper crown now finished in matching brickwork to the main body of the build. A privacy screen for a bicycle storage area at ground level has been lowered.
A statement included with the application explained: “The development seeks to create a distinctive and unique environment with a wide range of internal and external amenities — reflecting the themes of sustainability, community and placemaking.
“The footprint is smaller than the extant planning application but steps up in height to minimise building footprint and increase the amount of external area.”
Approving the application, planning officials stated: “The principle of purpose-built student accommodation in this location is considered to be appropriate and to meet the aims of the policy to support the growth of higher and further education institutions within Glasgow and strengthen its economy.”
Planning permission was previously given for an office block on the site.
