Tenant given free rent gift from Veterans Housing Scotland
Veterans Housing Scotland tenant Dorothy Steel will this month celebrate her 70th anniversary as a tenant of the organisation.
To celebrate, the Edinburgh-based charity has confirmed that she will no longer be required to pay any rent.
The 99-year-old lives in Paisley and first moved to Glasgow with her husband who was in the Glasgow Highlanders, part of the Highland Light Infantry.
At a reception in the Glasgow City Chambers, also attended by veterans minister Graeme Dey, Dorothy’s son David received a certificate from the VHS chairman, Group Captain Bob Kemp to mark the occasion.
David said: “This is a wonderful surprise, my mum will be thrilled! She loves her home and the support she receives from neighbours and, of course, Veterans Housing Scotland.”
Bob Kemp added: “When we discovered that Dorothy had been a tenant for 70 years, is in her 100th year, and learned her story we were keen to acknowledge both her tenancy and her husband’s contribution. We felt this would be an appropriate way to do both.
“As a charity which has supported disabled veterans in Scotland since 1915 we are proud to boast such wonderful tenants as Dorothy as we continue to provide homes for today’s veterans.”
Veterans Housing Scotland has around 650 homes across Scotland helping more than 1000 veterans and their families.
