Over 100 attendees from across the area gathered at Newmains and St. Brigid’s Community Hub to discuss key topics, including the cost-of-living crisis, the supply of new council homes, anti-social behaviour and digital progress.

The popular marketplace was bigger and better than ever with stalls packed with information and staff on hand to provide advice and giveaways.

One of the new features of this year’s conference was the celebration of ‘Local Heroes’. Local housing staff were asked to nominate a tenant that goes above and beyond for their local community and their commitment to helping others. The worthy winners were Jim McGinty from Coatbridge, Kilsyth and Northern Corridor; Sharon Craig from Airdrie and Cumbernauld; Tom Muir from Wishaw and Shotts and Liz Duffy from Motherwell and Bellshill.

Opening the event was housing convener, Councillor Michael McPake. He said: “This was my first time opening the annual tenants’ conference. I was delighted that so many people took the time not only to come along but to play an active part in discussions and share their own experiences.

“Our conference, which plays a key role in involving tenants and residents in housing services, gave me the opportunity to meet and talk face-to-face to tenants about some of the key issues facing people and our communities right now.

“I hope everyone enjoyed the event and learned more about the services we’re delivering, our exciting plans for improving towns and communities and the investment we’re making to deliver modern, affordable homes for our tenants. I’m sure the conference will act as a catalyst for tenants to take part in the range of future participation opportunities and events the team has planned.”

Peter Fanning, chair of new group, Kirkwood Tenants’ & Residents’ Association, said: “I’m part of a new tenant’s and residents’ group and this was my first conference. I really enjoyed the day and particularly liked the question-and-answer time as we got the chance to speak to housing staff and discuss issues that matter to us. My favourite part about events like these are the more interactive sessions where tenants get to share views, have conversations and have an impact.”

Another tenant, Kerith Melbrooke, added: “I really enjoyed the conference – it’s great to hear what is happening in local communities, meet other tenants, speak to housing staff, and get your questions answered. There are always lots of ways to get involved and if you didn’t make it today, come along to next year’s event!”
