Tenants settle into new council homes in Motherwell

North Lanarkshire Council has completed another housing project delivering new homes in the heart of the Motherwell community.
A total of 48 new flats at Brandon Street are now home to tenants and form part of the council’s ambitious new housing supply programme to deliver 6,000 new homes by 2035.
The new homes transform the previously derelict site and comprise 42 new flats, while a further six are within the refurbished YMCA building. They were delivered by CCG (Scotland) Ltd and benefit from renewable technologies, including a ground source heat pump system which helps reduce heating emissions while making the homes more energy efficient and comfortable for our tenants.
New tenant, Mrs May Nicol, who was joined by her daughter Lesley, welcomed the convener into her new home. She said: “I am thoroughly enjoying my new home and love how friendly the neighbours are. I moved from an upstairs cottage flat in Motherwell to a ground level wheelchair accessible flat which is perfect and helps with my mobility.”
Marking the completion was housing convener, Councillor Michael McPake. He was joined by local councillors Kenneth Duffy and David Robb, representatives from CCG (Scotland) Ltd and council officers.
Councillor Michael McPake added: “Our high-quality affordable homes are transforming local communities and town centres. Our Brandon Street development is in an ideal location for transport links and amenities and has dramatically changed the local streetscape.
“One of the key features of this development is the use of renewable technology which doesn’t present additional carbon to the environment and maximises energy efficiency. Examples of this include a ground source heat pump system which controls heating and stores hot water, making our tenants’ homes more comfortable.
“We’re making significant progress in delivering on our new build programme, providing jobs, boosting the local economy and delivering homes for our tenants now and for generations to come. It’s all part of our ambition to make North Lanarkshire the place to live.”
The project cost £11 million with grant funding of £4.158m from the Scottish Government, which includes additional funding from Scotland’s Heat Network Fund in part to support the heating delivered.
CCG managing director, David Wylie, commented: “CCG began working with North Lanarkshire Council in 2019. Since then, our partnership has contributed to the transformation of communities across the region with the delivery of hundreds of new homes, as well as helping the Council transition into a new, ‘net zero ready’ housing era - first at Dykehead Road in Airdrie and now here at Brandon Street in Motherwell.
“With the conversion of the YMCA building, the project has a unique character, however, it shares common traits of those before it, with its delivery only made possible through a shared commitment to collaboration, and a willingness to adopt advanced building methods and emerging renewable technologies.
“Ultimately, this has ensured local housing needs continue to be met, and we look forward to building on this momentum with North Lanarkshire Council in the months ahead through various new developments.”
