Tannahill Centre honoured with The King's Award for Voluntary Service

The Tannahill Centre, a cornerstone of community life in Ferguslie Park, has been awarded The King’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest accolade a local voluntary group can receive in the UK.

This prestigious recognition highlights the dedication, resilience, and impact of the Tannahill Centre’s volunteers, who work tirelessly to uplift and empower their community.

Founded to provide essential services and foster connections within Ferguslie Park, the Tannahill Centre, part of the Ferguslie Group, has become an invaluable resource for people of all ages and backgrounds. With initiatives addressing everything from food insecurity and mental health support to skills development and community events, the centre has had a transformative effect on the lives of local residents.

Receiving The King’s Award for Voluntary Service is a testament to the remarkable commitment and passion of the Tannahill Centre’s volunteers. Their contributions have supported the Centre’s mission of making Ferguslie Park a more inclusive, vibrant and supportive community.

Paul Irwin, community development manager of the Tannahill Centre, expressed his gratitude, saying: “This award belongs to every volunteer, past and present, who has put in hours of selfless dedication to make our centre a safe, welcoming, and inspiring place for everyone.

“This includes all of the volunteer-led groups that have established themselves over the years, such as the Darkwood Crew, Tannahill events team and no substitute for life men’s group and many more who do so much to directly address issues within the area. The hard work and resilience of all Ferguslie volunteers have made a lasting difference in the lives of so many, and we couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve achieved together.”

Catrina Miller chief executive of the Ferguslie Group, said: “This recognition reflects the collective strength and dedication of the Ferguslie community. The King’s Award is a testament to our volunteers’ unwavering commitment to service, and to the resilience and unity of the people who make this centre a welcoming place of hope and opportunity.

“We’re excited to celebrate 30 years of growth, support, and empowerment with everyone who has been part of this journey. A special thanks goes to our recently retired volunteer coordinator, Bobbie McCabe, whose guidance and passion have left a lasting legacy on our team and the entire community.”

The award highlights the Tannahill Centre’s continued commitment to addressing critical local issues while fostering a strong sense of belonging and pride among Ferguslie Park residents. It also emphasises the importance of community-driven action, especially during times of need, as witnessed over the past few years when the centre expanded its services to meet unprecedented demand.

In celebration of this prestigious honour and the Tannahill Centre’s 30th anniversary, which marks three decades since it was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1995, a special community event will be held. The celebration will bring together volunteers, supporters, and residents for a day of gratitude and reflection on the centre’s remarkable journey and contributions.
