Thistle Housing Association joins Glasgow hunger campaign
Thistle Housing Association has become one of the first RSL’s to be granted funding by the Voluntary Action Fund for Glasgow City Councils Holiday Hunger campaign.
The Association, based in Toryglen in Glasgow’s south-side, will be facilitating a full activities programme for primary school children in their community hall throughout the six-week school holiday period, with healthy lunches being provided for all attending children.
The Holiday Hunger campaign aims to have a holiday meal scheme in all 23 city wards from the end of June, each feeding as many youngsters as possible. This follows recent findings that many parents in Glasgow struggle to keep their children fed, with pressure on foodbanks soaring during the school holidays.
Thistle Housing Association’s operation manager, Daniella Sprott, said: “The Association are delighted to be able to facilitate this project for the children of Toryglen. As an organisation on the front line, we are more than aware of the daily struggles many families endure with the financial pressure to feed and stimulate their children during the school holiday period.
“We have a strong relationship with the two local primary schools within the area, who are equally delighted to have this project running throughout the holidays. Within 3 hours of advertising the project to local families we were at 50% capacity, highlighting the need for projects of this kind.”
The Association is working in partnership with Jeely Piece Club - a children’s and family organisation - to deliver a range of fun activities throughout the projects duration. Toryglen Summer Club will also incorporate a community chef to provide the healthy meals, ensuring children are returning to school after the holidays mentally and physically ready.
