Garrion People’s Housing Co-op (GPHC) has announced with deep sadness the death of Davie Cooper, committee member and previous chair and vice chair of the co-op.

Davie was 82 and sadly passed away on 26 April 2025 after his health deteriorated over the last year.  He and his wife Elizabeth moved into GPHC’s retirement housing at Law View, Overtown in 2003 and both have been active tenants, passionate committee members and always did their best for the benefit of Garrion People’s Housing Co-op. Both have been very active in tenant groups over the years at Law View, including the local RTO, Welcome Group, and breakfast club. He had been his wife’s carer for the last number of years and took all of this in his stride while he got on with many other chores and commitments.

Davie was a well-known face at conferences until recent years, particularly the annual event held by EVH.

Victoria Dallas, current chair of Garrion People’s Housing Co-op, said: “Having known Davie for a number of years, it was clear to see how much being part of the Co-op and other local voluntary groups meant to him. He was very supportive of me when he was vice chair and would stand in as chair when required, without any issue. But he was also incredibly supportive and encouraging towards other committee members, tenants and staff and always had their wellbeing at heart but always acted in the best interests of the Co-operative and our progression. Davie is to be thanked for his contribution to Garrion over the years.”

Davie served as chair of the Co-op’s governing body on a few separate occasions in his time with Garrion. He was chair when the Co-op opened its new community facility at CentrePoint, Gowkthrapple, as well as seeing another new build development built by Garrion.

He was a keen cyclist all of his life and was seen cycling in North Lanarkshire until he was around 80 years old.

Right up until the last few weeks, Davie was still active and volunteered in various local groups and was always helping others, whether it was local residents, the church group, or other voluntary organisations that he cared deeply about.

GPHC said its thoughts are with Elizabeth, his wife, and all of the children, grandchildren and great great-grandchildren and friends at this sad time.
